Please join me for this special concert filmed before the pandemic with my New York based ensemble which includes the great singer, dancer and choreographer Bárbara Martínez, flamenco guitar virtuoso Cristian Puig and master bassist Sean Kupisz. Gerard Edery (vocals, guitar) is recognized as a leading musical folklorist, a master singer and guitarist with a remarkable range of ethnic folk styles and traditions at his command. He is a recipient of many awards and grants including The Sephardic Musical Heritage Award and a “Meet the Composer” grant for his original songs. Gerard has been featured in performances at Zankel Hall (Carnegie Hall), Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Merkin Concert Hall , Florence Gould Hall, The United Nations in both New York City and Geneva, Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Royce Hall in L.A., Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Fez International Festival of Sacred Music in Morocco, Festival Cervantino in Mexico, Vilnius International Folk Festival in Lithuania, Spitafield Festival in London and International Folk Music Festival in Warsaw, among many others. Gerard has recorded 18 CDs of his work on the Sefarad Records label and published a widely acclaimed Sephardic Songbook. An accomplished classical singer, he has also performed over 30 roles with opera companies all over the U.S. including the New York Lyric Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, L’Opera Francais de New York, the Boston Opera, New Orleans Opera, Lake George Opera, New jersey Lyric Opera, Oklahoma Opera, Opera Milwaukee, the Long Island Lyric Opera and the Opera Ensemble of New York.
Bárbara Martínez (dancer, vocalist and choreographer) is a longtime member of several noted flamenco dance companies, as well as The Metropolitan Opera. Born in Venezuela to a family of artists, Bárbara grew up in New York City, where she started performing in opera, off-Broadway and film at age 10. She currently sings with Pasión y Arte Flamenco Company, Arts Flamenco, Edwin Aparicio Flamenco Company, Spirit of Sepharad and dances with The Oscar Valero Company. She has also sung for Pilar Rioja at El Repertorio Español and danced as a soloist in festivals at Lincoln Center, Town Hall and Symphony Space. She has also collaborated with Gerard Edery in Flamenco Sepharad since 2000 and is a featured dancer and singer in The Spirit of Sepharad Ensemble's Caravan: a 500 Year Musical Journey. Bárbara recently had the honor of teaching master classes for The Cirque du Soleil and New England Conservatory. Bárbara received a scholarship from the famed Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville, Spain for advanced study in flamenco singing. She has also studied jazz voice and theory with Barry Harris, acting at The New York Actor's Conservatory and early music education (Kodály) at New York University. Bárbara is an Honors graduate of Brown University. She is very excited to be taking her own flamenco fusion group to Carnegie Hall on Saturday, February 27, 2010.
Cristian Puig is a flamenco guitarist, composer, and singer with Gypsy roots in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and a string of artistic successes in film, in the recording studio, and live on stage. He played the role of guitarist and singer “Joaquin” in the Alliance Theatre’s 2013 production of “Zorro”, and he has worked in films, such as “A Late Quartet”, for which he composed Flamenco music for the soundtrack. He performs as a Flamenco singer and guitarist across the United States of America and with his Flamenco trio Puig-Sanchez-Moreno in his hometown of New York. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cristian Puig is the son of flamenco singer Gloria Monreal and Flamenco guitarist Pablo Puig. As a teenager, Cristian began his studies in classical guitar at the conservatory of Manuel de Falla as well as Flamenco guitar with his father. Soon he took classes in Flamenco guitar with Quique de Cordoba and furthered his studies in jazz, bossa nova and contemporary music. In 1990 he formed and toured South America with his group Rabat, fusing jazz, bossa nova and Flamenco. Cristian released the CD “Entre Cuerdas” featuring Flamencojazz fusion and has just released a new CD entitled “Inflam Project”, which crosses Indian and Flamenco styles.
Sean Kupisz (electric bass and cajon) was born in Long Beach, California and began his bass studies with his uncle at age 8. He has composed music for the PBS Documentary “International High” and toured with the flamenco group Amanacer founded by Peter Cortez and Igor el Ruso. Since 1993 he has worked continuously with Igor el Ruso on projects that include, among others, Summer Season tours with the Jose Greco Dance Company and Pablo Rodarte’s Flamenco Christmas show, “Natividad Flamenca.” At the present time he is also a permanent faculty member of the American Institute of Guitar as an upright and electric bass instructor.
